Taura Twisters, also referred to as some as Taurus, is a member of the Zodiac Police exclusive to the Nanbaka web manga series. She, along with her brother Tauro Twisters, are a reference to Taurus, one of the twelve Zodiac signs in astrology.
Appearance[]
Taura is a tall, curvy, and attractive woman with abundant spiky white hair of varying lengths, the longest clumps reaching down below her waist, which somewhat resembles a pine tree in shape. Two swept tufts of her hairpieces curve to the sides. She has sky blue eyes that tilt downwards in the center, framed by a set of rather long white eyelashes and faint freckles sprinkled across her nose and cheeks. She appears to have a white tail with a red ribbon tied at the end.
Her clothing is similar to a pin-up cowgirl; a 'cow' printed bra, which emphasizes her breasts, a dolly jean shirt tied under her breasts, and cow-printed cowgirl/boy style pants with holes cut out around her upper thighs. Along with black short shorts, she wears a white thong with the strings pulled up to the top of her hips. She has a cowboy hat with the zodiac medallion on the front, black gloves with stars cut out that most of the Zodiac Police members wear, and a brown belt decorated with gold studs, a matching zodiac buckle in its center with fringes on it with a cow tail strapped on her bottom. She also sports a red ribbon on her neck with a cowbell tied in the middle.
In the more recent chapters, her cowboy hat is now black instead of blue, adorned with a red band and a silver medallion of the zodiac sign she was based off, Taurus, in the middle. She wears a brown & black crop-top style jacket adorned with silver studs, and a red belt with a buckle that matches the medallion on her hat. Her pants have a similar cut to the one in her previous outfit, only now the cow print is replaced with all brown, decorated with fringes on the sides and silver studs. She appears to not wear a white thong anymore, and her black fingerless gloves no longer have the star-shaped holes on the back (most likely because it is implied that she is no longer part of the Zodiac Police[1]). The ribbon around her neck is a darker shade of red, with the ribbon now tied on the side with no cowbell. She still wears a cow print bra and black short shorts.
Personality[]
Taura is a dedicated and earnest person. She is bubbly and free with her expressions normally. In dangerous situations, she is calm and level-headed, but can become panicked if caught off-guard, claiming to be quite jumpy[2]. She is very honest and can be blunt with her comments about people's mistakes while not meaning any harm. She has a strong sense of justice, even quitting the Zodiac Police when she accidentally kills a criminal she was pursuing, despite the fact that the Zodiac Police is never given any punishment for killing people on the job[2].
A charismatic person, Taura is able to win over Hell and learns to coordinate with him extremely well. She fully trusts the people close to her, never doubting their reliability.[3] She is also very altruistic, not seeking vengeance for her brother's murder or Shiki's subsequent theft of his body, but only wishing to reunite with him and give him a proper burial. Others may see her goals as insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but she takes great offense at having her goals dismissed.[4] She is also rather creative, making up nicknames for all the Shiki operatives.[5]
Background[]
Taura was raised on a small ranch with her parents and older brother. They didn't make much money, and when their parents died from overwork, the two were sent to different relatives. As children, Tauro promised Taura that they would reunite. Eventually, they succeeded in doing so and returned to living in the ranch of their childhood. When Taura followed in Tauro's footsteps to become a police officer, Tauro supported her wholeheartedly.[3] Due to a comment she makes to Tauro about leaving him in charge of the second unit, it is possible that she had partial or full command over the Zodiac Police's second unit.[2]
As part of the Zodiac Police, Taura once apprehended a pair of drug mules in an American city. One of the pair (named Hell) held her off, allowing the other (Nico) to escape.[6] Taura chased after Hell, eventually cornering him in a hotel. She tried to lasso his torso, but ended up lassoing his neck. Hell panicked after that and jumped out of a window, inadvertently hanging himself.[2]
Plot[]
Escape B4 Arc[]
Taura enters the abandoned hotel Jyugo, Nico, Rock, and Uno are staying in to apprehend them. However, as she is about to grab Nico, Hell comes and intervenes.[7] He reveals that he knows her and that it has been a while, making her scream out in fear as she finally remembers him.
Between Arcs[]
After Hell informs her that she killed him, Taura decides to quit the Zodiac Police to atone for having taken a life. She never informs her brother of the reason behind her resignation to spare his feelings, and leaves him in charge of the second unit. Hell and Taura reconcile their differences, and Hell begins to haunt Taura.[2] Moved by Taura's love for her brother, Hell promises to assist Taura in finding her brother.[3]
Part 4[]
Sea & Thunder Arc[]
Taura and Hell locate the scene of her brother's murder.[8]
Between Arcs[]
There, they find his ghost and the two siblings reunite. Hell informs them that Tauro lingering as a ghost means that he has a powerful grudge that he needs to rid himself of, or risk being turned into an evil spirit.[2] Thus, the three embark on a journey to retrieve Tauro's body from Shiki and give it a proper burial.[4] To achieve this goal, Taura observes Shiki's operations from afar, cataloguing the abilities and appearances of all the members before making proper contact.[5]
Ghost Cowgirl Arc[]
Taura locates and enters Shiki Headquarters, taking even Mashiro by surprise. He deems her to be special, and asks Isou to capture her without killing her. Then, he abandons Isou to this task to instead focus on his other research. Taura having located Shiki Headquarters was the main obstacle, as the head of security, Tsu-in, had been slacking off and thus entering was easy. Still, Hell cautions her to be careful. When Taura responds to his words, Isou is confused from where he is observing her, as he can find no communication equipment being used by her. Security robots are activated to protect the base, and Taura, though startled by these machines she has never seen before, is able to gather her wits and shoot them all. They are instantly destroyed, but Taura notes it would likely not have worked if she had not modified her gun for combat against non-humans. Seeing that machines wouldn't work against her, Tsu-in volunteers to apprehend her. Hell warns Taura as she approaches, sensing that Tsu-in isn't human.[9]
Initially mistaking Tsu-in for a child, Tsui-in is quick to correct Taura on this assumption and introduces herself. When Tsu-in asks for Taura's motivations, Taura explains that she wishes to retrieve her brother's body and give it a proper burial. Tsu-in thinks this is a silly reason and laughs at her. Taura takes offense and rushes forward, aiming her gun point-blank at Tsu-in's face. Tsu-in retreats and decides to challenge Taura to a match; if Taura wins, she can have her brother's body back. Taura agrees to this and opens fire on Tsu-in. However, she is able to catch all of Taura's bullets using her hand attachments. Tsu-in claims that if she were to catch Taura, the match would be her win, but that avoiding her grasp is next to impossible. To increase her evasion, Taura decides to let Hell possess her body.[4]
Hell and Tauro swap in and out of her body until the threat of first Tsuin and then Jin is neutralized. Once Isou is able to extract a promise from Tauro to talk peacefully with Mashiro, Taura regains awareness. After she is briefed on the current situation by Tauro, Mashiro invites her to observe all the happenings around Shiki, to decide if she wants to view them as enemies or allies down the line. With Hell's ability assisting her in getting around without being detected, Mashiro can tell that they would be perfect for this role. Agreeing to this arrangement, Taura begins to live at Shiki Headquarters and the members of the organization are ordered to not hurt her.[10] On her first night with this arrangement, Shiki has a dinner party with all available members, where Mashiro explains the existence of togabito to Taura and what his plans are to liberate them from Nanba Prison.[11]
After the dinner, Taura, Hell, and Tauro explain their situation to Shiki. The explanation is cut short when Taura's shirt's buttons rip off.[12] Kujaku quickly intervenes and gets Taura another shirt. The two have a conversation and Taura invites Kujaku to go shopping with her. Kujaku, struggling with finding her personal style, accepts the offer, noting that she's never been invited somewhere by anyone.[13]
Skills & Abilities[]
Ghost Mediumship[]
After a series of undescribed events, Taura gained the ability to see and interact with ghosts.[2] It is a unique ability so rare that Mashiro has never been able to study it before. Taura uses this to gather information by befriending and talking to ghosts. She can also be possessed by ghosts, lending her the skills and abilities of the passed spirit in question. When possessed, she is unconscious and is unaware of anything happening around her.[10]
Hell Partnership[]
Her ghostly companion, Hell, notes that he and Taura are a special combination, which allows them to go beyond the level of what most ghosts can accomplish. Generally, poltergeists are only able to do small things to unsettle people, such as closing doors or making phones ring. Through Taura, Hell is able to amplify his abilities by a large degree, allowing him to throw around piles of debris and fully paralyze human beings.[14]
Lack of Presence[]
One of Taura and Hell's most significant combined powers is their ability to go unnoticed by people and even machines.[10] Taura can even utilize this while fully conscious and not possessed by Hell.[4] This lack of presence allows her to observe Shiki's movements, sneak into the Shiki base with little effort, and get the jump on Tsu-in even when she has her eyes on Taura.
Weapons Modification[]
Taura modified her own guns to be able to fight Togabito.[9]
Equipment[]
Lasso[]
In the Zodiac Police, Taura uses a rope lasso to apprehend criminals. She accidentally strangled someone with it once.[2] It is uncertain whether she continues to use it afterwards, seeing how guilty she felt about that incident.
Revolver[]
Taura has a revolver she has modified to fight non-humans, in anticipation of fighting Shiki. This gun is able to easily destroy machinery Taura has never seen before.[9]
Relationships[]
Tauro Twisters[]
Tauro Twisters is Taura's older brother. They care about each other deeply, having been separated when they were younger only to reunite and return to their old family ranch. To earn the money to do so, Tauro became a bodyguard with a ruthless reputation.[15] When Taura quit the Zodiac Police, Tauro believed that she had been discharged due to his own failures. He wished desperately to have her return and worked hard so that she may be allowed to do so.[15] Despite his softhearted nature, he was driven to holding Jun at gunpoint once his sister's life was put at risk.[16] Even when he died, all he could think about was his sister, relieved that at least she was alive.[17]
In return, Taura wishes to protect him too, such as not telling him that she had killed someone so as to not make him sad.[2] She worries about him when she doesn't hear from him for a long time[3], and seeks out the site of his death upon realizing what had happened to him.
Hell[]
Taura and Hell initially met when Taura was in the Zodiac Police and Hell was involved in drug distribution. Taura ends up killing him, and Hell develops a grudge strong enough to keep him anchored to Earth. Despite this, Hell eventually gets over this injustice and forgives Taura, who remains greatly apologetic for it.[2] Hell is charmed by Taura and her love for her brother, to the point of promising to help her reunite with him. Even after finding Tauro's soul, he continues striving to help Taura. Taura considers Hell to be extremely reliable and puts a lot of trust in him.[3] The two have a special connection, working well in fights together.
Mashiro Mutsuki[]
Mashiro is greatly intrigued by Taura and her ability to perceive ghosts, something he is incapable of. He wishes to talk with her and study these abilities.[18] He offers her the opportunity to observe Shiki's actions and provide context for everything. Taura takes him up on this offer. Outside of their mutual curiosity of one another, they don't have more of a relationship.[10]
Kujaku[]
Taura and Kujaku bond when Kujaku helps Taura after a wardrobe malfunction. Kujaku is politely pleasant with Taura, which she returns with her usual exuberant friendliness. When Kujaku expresses her insecurity that she doesn't truly know what she likes and just picks out things she thinks look strange, Taura encourages her to explore her sense of style and go shopping with her. Kujaku decides that she doesn't know how to feel about Taura, but still reciprocates Taura's attempts at making a connection with her.[13]
