Background[]
Ikkaku once joined the army, but he refused to mention what happened at that time.
According to Musashi, Ikkaku was another experiment of the Man with the Scar and swore to get revenge on him.[2] Further details about his encounter with the Man with the Scar is unknown.
At one point in time, he met Musashi in a different prison and was his cellmate. There, he had found Musashi in a forest alone, commenting on his state, then saying that he came "crawling back from hell" because he couldn't see him as anything else but a pushover. He told Musashi that having faith was pointless because they were different from others. While guards are find Ikkaku and demand for him to surrender, he continues to tell Musashi that he doesn't have to believe in him, but believe in his own power. He invites him to get stronger together because then they would be able to take revenge on the Man with the Scar, while electrocuting some guards.
He says that he must escape his own hell through his own choices and power. He tells him to not die, that his phoenix tattoo would cry, then tells him to toss aside his past and start newly and that he can't leave him alone, requesting for him to get stronger with him. After Musashi agrees,[3] he tells Musashi about other people who are carrying shackles[2] and that he is searching for an inmate with red shackles which transformed to drills. Later, he had taught Musashi how to fight and disappeared.
At some point, he had found Zakuro and said to him that he was searching for another inmate with black shackles, who Zakuro had known. Ikkaku then later shared this information with Musashi, confirming there being multiple inmates with shackles.[2]
Plot[]

Ikkaku's debut.
Ikkaku complains about being sent to Nanba Prison and Shin Sauzando's treatment of men. He comments that the weather in Nanba is great and then tells Musashi he hasn't seen him for a while and that he has come back.[4] He introduces himself as prisoner No. 1111 and that he can call him "Ikkaku". He says that he came to Nanba because he wanted to meet him and that he will get started.[5]
Musashi asks him where he has been, while Ikkaku mocks Musashi's seriousness, saying that it was because of urgent business. He says that he has came to Nanba because he came to take care of the urgent business, while Musashi comments on how his attitude hasn't changed. While Musashi asks him on what business he has with him, Hitoshi Sugoroku suddenly crashes Ikkaku onto the ground, leaving him with a bloody nose and annoyed. Ikkaku punches Hitoshi in retaliation, telling him to leave, commenting on how weird Nanba Prison is.
He decides that instead of telling Musashi what he means, he will show him. Ikkaku attempts to punch him, but Musashi blocks, leaving Ikkaku impressed, while Musashi states it's because he taught him, while Ikkaku retorts that he is overjoyed that he still has strength. Musashi again asks him why he has come here, and Ikkaku replies that he will unfortunately have to die.[3]

Ikkaku compliments Musashi for dodging his punch.
Ikkaku states to Musashi that he had heard that he was imprisoned and wasn't able to use his powers, explaining that he came to Nanba to beat him back into shape and that he can't imagine him forgetting his own goals. He hears Musashi explain that he hates them and wants to get revenge on them, but punches him and holds his face, asking him if he is really Musashi, because he taught him to get stronger for the sake of throwing everything else away.
As he holds Musashi's head against a wall, Hitoshi demands him to stop interrupting during his match with Genrou Byakuya, much to Ikkaku's annoyance. Hitoshi pleads with him, while Ikkaku thinks about him saying "promise". He punches Hitoshi, making him fall to the ground, and then declares that he has gotten rid of him, before Hitoshi gets up, leaving Ikkaku confused. He decides to just ignore Hitoshi and then continues talking to Musashi.

Ikkaku electrocutes Musashi using his powers.
He tells Musashi that he remembers that the medical team at Nanba put a chip in him to control his powers, and Musashi says yes and that he can't fight with him, while Ikkaku replies that he is going to make it so he will be able to use his powers and that it is one of the reasons he came to Nanba. Musashi yells at him and demands for him to stop because he had finally been freed from it, to which Ikkaku replies that he's letting others control his powers and not himself, to which Musashi replies that he is the person in control of his powers. Musashi says that if he has any special circumstances, he can talk to him before Ikkaku holds the sides of his head and electrocuting him.
He asks Musashi if he knows about his power, then explains that his power is him controlling electricity at will. He explains that he can produce electricity inside his own body and circulate it through other living creatures, the chip in Musashi's brain stops electrical signals when they are ignited, and that he can't use his powers if his brain can't send electrical signals throughout the rest of his body, but that he can reconnect the severed electrical signals and that he is only switching out the circuitry in his brain.
Hitoshi yells for Ikkaku to stop, while Ikkaku electrocutes him in turn and wonders if he died and believes that he was only sturdy on the outside. Ikkaku asks Musashi how it is to feel "reborn", while Musashi says that on his new list of people who he hates and have ruined his life, that Ikkaku is one of them.[6]
